Since the beginning of the year, the promotion of prefabricated steel structural housing has become a key task frequently mentioned in the National Housing and Urban-Rural Construction Work Conferences, and local governments have introduced policies to support the promotion and implementation of prefabricated steel structural housing projects.

According to information, the Hainan Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development issued the “Notice on Promoting the Application and Development of Steel Structural Prefabricated Buildings” on 1 January. Starting from 2020, the Hainan Government will select a number of projects among provincial municipal infrastructures, public buildings and residential buildings as pilot projects for prefabricated steel structural buildings, to promote the development of steel structural prefabricated buildings in the province.

In the past two years, the prefabricated construction industry in Hainan has experienced a rapid development. The relevant data show that the total floor area of prefabricated buildings as launched in 2018 was 820,000 square meters, and it was close to 4 million square meters by 2019. Steel structural buildings enjoy many advantages due to high industrialization, shorter construction period, convenient transportation of components and parts, recyclable materials throughout the life cycle, and environmental friendliness. Therefore, the Hainan Government will preferentially adopt steel structure construction in government-invested public buildings, private-invested and other public buildings of a certain scale.

In addition, the Hainan Government also encourages steel structure companies to join hands with universities and colleges, research institutes, etc. in conducting industry-university-research cooperative studies, strengthen research on application technology of steel structural prefabricated housing under tropical marine monsoon climate, formulate relevant technical standards, and make steady efforts in promoting the application of steel structural prefabricated buildings in residential projects such as public rental housing, talent apartments, government subsidized housing, shantytown renovation and impoverished resident relocation, new countryside construction, rural dilapidated housing renovation and commercial housing.
